Legend
Once upon a time, there was a King by name Uparisravasu. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna. But over a period, he became very arrogant and basking in self-pride and ego. Lord Krishna wanted to teach him a lesson. Lord Krishna wanted him to present him with 1000 vessels of butter freshly made on that day. Since he was a King, he thought that it was not a very difficult job and hence ordered all the people to get him a vessel of butter made out that day. However much he would try, he could not get more than 999 vessels of butter. So he thought that he could keep 1 vessel empty and thought that Lord Krishna may not know that. He kept the vessels covered and presented 1000 vessels, all but one with butter.
But when Lord Krishna opened the first vessel, it was empty. And so were the second and third vessels. Thus he found all the 1000 vessels empty. The King felt that it was the work of Lord Krishna and he realized his mistake and gave up his self-pride. He realized that Lord had come to make him give up his self-pride and teach him good.
This was supposed to have taken place on the Full Moon Day (Amavasya) in the Tamil month of Thai (Jan Feb) Since the King had taken bath in the holy tank in the temple on Thai Amavasya and worshipped Lord Vishnu at Therezhundur, its considered auspicious to pray Lord Vishnu called as Amaruviyappan at Therezhundur on that day.
Brahma, the creator, once abducted the cattle herd of Lord Krishna and took them away to Therezhundur. Brahma thought that Lord Krishna would come in search of his cattle herd and that he could get the attention of the Lord. Knowing the designs of Brahma, Lord Krishna creates another cattle herd. Brahma surrendered to Lord Krishna and prayed that He should be amongst His cattle herd at Therezhundur and Lord Krishna agreed to be so.
According to another Legend, Devendran, the Lord of Devas, had once presented a Flying Chariot to King Upavisravasu, an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, so that he can use that to reach the Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu to worship Him.

One day, King Uparisravasu was traveling in the flying chariot and Lord Krishna was with His Cattle herd. He thought that Lord Vishnu had given him everything and he was haughty. He was so arrogant that he did not even notice Lord Krishna with the cattle herd. The shadow of the chariot fell on the ground and Lord Krishna stamped on the shadow that made the flying chariot come down to earth and it got embedded on the earth. Hence this place came to be known as Therazhundur, the place where the chariot was grounded.
The Vimanam of the temple is called Garuda Vimanam as Garudan presented this to the Lord. Garuda had prayed to the Lord to be at his side, and hence you see Garuda next to the Lord at this temple, contrary to the various other Vishnu temples where Garudan shall be opposite to the Lord, facing Him.
