Thirukkoodalur is one of the 108
Abodes of Lord Vishnu (108 Divya Desams), which is situated at about 12 kms
from Tiruvaiyaru on the Tiruvaiyaru-Kumbakonam road in Tamilnadu. This is also
called as Aaduthurai Perumal Koil or Sangama Kshetram. Thirumangai Azhwar has
sung in praise of the Lord here.
This temple is where the Devas
have congregated to worship Lord Vishnu and prayed him to save Earth from Demon
Hiranyakshan. Hence the reason for Lord Vishnus incarnation or Avtar - Varaha Avatar. The place is called
Thirukkoodalur as the Devas have come together to pray Lord Vishnu. (Koodal
means coming together). There is also a legend that says that an estranged wife
of a Chola King who was an ardent devotee of the Lord here was united with her
husband, and hence the name Thirukkoodalur.
Lord Jagatrakshaka Perumal has
given darshan to Devas, Saint Nandaka, King Ambareesan, Thirumangai Azhwar,
Brahma the Creator and the rivers Ganga, Yamuna and
Saraswathi at this place. When River Cauvery prayed Lord to wash away the sins
given by all the others by taking bath in the river, Lord said that she should
flow near His Shrine at Thirukkoodalur. Thus the sins of Cauvery were washed away.
The sthala vriksham or Holy Tree
here is Palaa (Jack fruit tree). When an attempt was made to cut a part of
the tree for carrying out renovation work, a natural formation of a big conch
was found on the trunk of the Jackfruit tree. Pilgrims throng the temple now
for witnessing this Conch formation.
Renovation and restoration work estimated to be
around US $150,000 was completed and the last Mahasamprokshanam was held in
June 2003.
