Thirukkannapuram is situated at about 6 kms from Nannilam,
on the way to Nagoor and Nagappatinam. Nannilam is on the way from
Mayiladuthurai to Tiruvarur. This temple is considered as the eastern gateway
to Srirangam. The Lord Vishnu is called as Sowrirajan in this temple.
Nammalvar, one of the 12 Azhwars (Holy Saints of Vaishnavism) adores this Lord
as the one who gives vaikundam, that is salvation.
Lord Indra had sat in penance on the banks of the
tank in this temple, praying Lord Vishnu. He had come to wash away his sins and
had performed yagna, installing the images of Navagrahas (nine planets) and
also offered special prayers for Sun. Lord Vishnu had granted him relief from
all his sins, according to the legend. Since the Lord faces the Navagrahas
under the main tower of the temple, prayers to Lord Vishnu shall give relief
from all Navagraha doshas.
Thitukkannamangai :
Thirukkannamangai is situated at about 8 kms from
Tiruvarur in Tamilnadu, on the route from Tiruvarur to Kumbakonam.
Bakthavatsala Perumal, the Lord
here saved the four Vedas from demons Madhu Kaidaba at the request and
penance of Brahma, the Creator. Brahma himself to the Lord built the sanctum
sanctorum. Brahma also prayed Lord Vishnu that he be accorded blessings and
have the privilege of being next to the Lord in this temple. The Holy Tank in
the temple Darsana Pushkarni has relieved Chandran (Moon), one of the
navagrahas, from his sins.
Thirukkannangudi :
Thirukkanangudi is situated at about 2 kms from
Sikkal, on the way from Tiruvarur to Nagapattinam. The main deity here is known
as Loganathan. Lord Brahma and saints Gowthama Rishi and Brighu Muni worshipped
the Lord here. Legend says that Saint Vasishta created the form of Lord Krishna
in butter, worshipped and meditated on that. Lord Krishna had reached out to
him on meditation.
Kapisthalam :
Kapisthalam is situated at about 12 kms from Kumbakonam,
on the road that leads to Tiruvaiyaru. The main deity is called as Gajendra
Varadan. Legend says that Lord Vishnu had saved the King of Elephants,
Gajendran, from the clutches of a crocodile and hence called Gajendra Varadan
The Lord here relieves all who pray him here, from the clutches of all evils,
sins and worries in life.
Therezhundur :
Therezhundur is situated at about
12 kms from Mayiladuthurai in Tamilnadu, about 3 kms off the road from
Mayiladuthurai to Kumbakonam. This is the birthplace of the great Tamil Poet
Kambar who authored Kamba Ramayanam.
Here, Lord Krishna is known as Aamaruviyappan,
thats the one with the cowherd, at the behest and prayers of Lord Brahma, the
creator. Lord here has given darshan to Prahlada, Markandeya, Lord Shiva,
Garuda and King Uparisravasu as per the legends. This is the place where Markandeya
had attained salvation. Garuda is seen here next to Lord Vishnu and not in the
front facing the Lord, as in other temples. This special position had been
granted to Garuda here as he had presented the tower on the sanctum sanctorum
to Lord and Garuda was granted his wish in return.
