Thiru Semponsei Koil is one of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu. This temple is one of the six temples situated at Thirunangur, about 8 kilometers from Sirkali, Tamilnadu. Thirunangur can be reached from Annankoil, on the Sirkali- Nagappatinam road or from Nangur Road on the Sirkali- Poompuhar route.
The Main Deity here is known as Perarulaalan seen in standing posture facing east. The Utsavar is known as Hemarangar or Semponarangar. Lord Rama is believed to have stayed here in the ashrama of Thrudanethra Muni. On the advice of the muni, Lord Rama made a cow in gold and stayed in that for four days. He then gave it as “dhaanam” to a Brahmin to get rid of the sins on killing Ravana. The Brahmin had used that gold given to him to construct this temple. Hence this temple came to be known as Semponseikoil (sempon-pure gold). Thaayar here is known as Allimaamalar Nachiyar. The star of the deity here is “Swathi” and hence special pujas are conducted every month on the day of “Swathi” here.
According to puranas, Lord Vishnu in the 11 Divya Desams in and around Thirunangur is present in 11 different forms as per the request of Lord Shiva. Sri Azhagiya Manavalan of Thiru Uraiyur is considered to have manifested himself as Perarulaalan here.
It is said that if any one stays in Thiru Semponseikoil for 3days and utters the Ashtaashara manthra for 32,000 times, they would get all wealth as desired. The legend says that Mukunthan, son of Kasyapan, a poor Brahmin from Kanchipuram came here, stayed for 3 days, uttered the Ashtaakshara mantra 32,000 times as advised by Lord Himself and attained wealth.
